Access to hygiene, right to dignity
More than 15% of the population in India still defecates in the open!
National School Sanitation Manual recommends one toilet per 40 girls and a female staff/ one urinal per 20 girls and one toilet plus urinal for 80 boys and one male staff/ one urinal per 20 boys.
THE PROBLEM
Defecating in the open, isn't it humiliating?
In the rural areas of Uttarakhand, children often defecate in the open due to the lack of proper toilet facilities in schools.
Young school girls are forced to defecate outside during their periods which is a prime reason for dropping out, as parents wish their daughters to be safe during their menstrual cycles.
AITYS is committed to offer safe and hygienic toilets for children so that they don’t have to drop out of school.
We aim to build better sanitation and toilet facilities for school children and bless them with the most basic facilities.
You can support us in building hygienic toilets for these children so that they enjoy their right to education without a second thought.
OUR SOLUTION
AITYS is committed to join hands and provide safe, clean and hygienic toilets in these schools so that no child has to ever miss precious learning time, which is so critical to shaping their future.
AITYS is targeting to build at least 1 toilet for girls in each of the 20 schools it is working with.
The estimate for building a toilet is around ₹ 7.5 lakhs which will include the following:
3 Washrooms with doors
1 changing room with door
2 wash basins
1 shower area with door
Place to install 1 incinerator for Sanitary Pads
2 water tanks
1 cupboard to store sanitary pads
Kota stone floor for easy wash and maintaining hygiene
THE IMPACT
Building better sanitation and toilet facilities means an increased attendance for children, especially girls, in school.
We want to cultivate the sense of self respect in children, to learn the importance of hygiene and have an awareness about sanitation. Forming a good hygiene practice from childhood can have a positive effect on a child's growth and development. It will help them stay healthy, ward off illnesses, and build better self-awareness. It will also help inculcate the notion of respecting one’s surroundings and one’s sense of privacy.
Childhood is the best time to cultivate a sense of self respect and consideration for others. Encouraging individuals and communities to adopt good sanitation and hygiene practices is one of the key factors for the development, and this endeavor will also help accelerate the efforts of India's Swachh Bharat Mission.
